John Heffernan has written over fifty books - more than thirty under his own name, for early readers to young adults, and a further nineteen as Charlie Carter, in the Pan Macmillan Battle Boy Series.

He is particularly passionate about some of his award-winning books: Spud, My Dog, The Island, Where There’s Smoke, Marty’s Shadow, and the truly uplifting Naveed - an Afghan boy’s struggle to keep his family together in the midst of war.

John ranks his latest book with these special works. Hotaka (March 2017) examines the 2011 Japanese tsunami through the eyes of a deeply introspective teenage boy.
